Drinkers at a Hingham pub will be able to raise their glasses to their town – after the local company behind a new beer vowed to donate £1 for each bottle they drink to a special local fund to support community projects.

Local house builder Abel Homes has commissioned a special beer from Attleborough brewer Wolf Brewery to mark the launch of 88 new family homes in the town.  Now the White Hart pub in Hingham’s market square is stocking the ale – and Abel Homes has pledged to give £1 for each bottle sold to Hingham Town Council to spend on local community amenities.

The new beer is called ‘The Hops’ – the same name as the site on Norwich Road where the Watton-based firm is building 88 new homes.  The land was once owned by Charles Crawshay, a 19th century brewer and partner in Youngs, Crawshay and Youngs brewery.

“We came up with the idea of creating a special beer to celebrate our site’s brewing heritage, and so that local people could raise a glass to the creation of much-needed family homes in the town,” said Abel Homes marketing manager Marcus Sanders.

“Being a local firm, we always try and get involved in the communities where we are building, and so we have decided to celebrate the launch of our show home on the site on 1st April by donating £1 for each bottle of the beer sold, with the proceeds being used to fund community projects chosen by Hingham Town Council.

“We are delighted that the White Hart, the splendid independent pub at the heart of the town, has agreed to stock the beer, and we hope that local people will both enjoy both the ale and the thought that each glass they drink is helping fund amenities in their community.”

The Hops Bitter is a fruity blonde ale, brewed using fruity hops.  It has a mild bitter hop taste, with fruity and floral notes, according to head brewer at Wolf Brewery Des D’Souza.

The first phase of the 88 new homes being built by Abel Homes in the town is launched on 1st April, with the opening of the show home.  The new homes will be highly energy-efficient and sustainable, with features such as photo-voltaic solar panels, triple glazing and high insulation levels.

All the new houses will have ‘A’ rated Energy performance Certificates (EPC), the highest achievable rating for energy efficiency – saving up to 32 per cent on annual energy bills compared with a standard house built to UK building regulations.

The new houses feature an innovative design which has taken its cue from an award-winning Conran-designed development in Norwich, also built by Abel homes.  They will offer fibre broadband direct to each home, as well as electric garage doors, and floor coverings to every room as standard.

The site is officially launched on Friday 1st April; the show home will be open Friday to Monday, 10am-4pm.
