DRINK DIFFERENT: CRU BOURGEOIS BORDEAUX
As any football fan will tell you, the Premiership is where the glamour and the big money is – but life in the Championship is often much more real and exciting. That’s a good metaphor for this month’s Drink Different column.
In wine terms, the Premiership is very much Cru Classé red wines from Bordeaux. In 1855 the top wines from this region were classed into five ‘growths’, and there has only been one change since (Château Mouton-Rothschild was promoted to the top rank in 1955).
Much like Premiership footballers, the money involved at this level is eye-watering. But the next level down in Bordeaux – the Cru Bourgeois - is where the real value lies, with wines from even the best years often coming in at less than £20. With quality like this, and at that price, this makes the Crus Bourgeois a real winner – a reason for even Norwich fans to cheer on the Reds!
