DRINK DIFFERENT - PINTO GRIGIO/VIURA
Wine fads come and go, but one thing you can guarantee as soon as the sun comes out: Pinot Grigio will be back in demand. The grape matches the trend for lighter style wines, and the best have a faint floral aroma, high acidity, maybe even a slight spritzy character - and are easy drinking.
Sadly, the cheaper end of the Pinot Grigio scale often lacks character; the grape has been a victim of its own popularity, with quality suppliers unable to keep up with demand.
A grape which is coming into its own right now is Viura, the workhorse white grape of Spain. Also known as Macabeo, it also delivers light, easy-drinking wines, with a similarly floral character. Offering stunning value, it’s definitely one to try as you enjoy the early summer sunshine.
