DRINK DIFFERENT - VERDEJO

1st Sep 2015
Verdejo

Sauvignon Blanc continues to be amongst those ‘safe’ grapes that many people pick from the wine list, offering green, tangy flavours which vary between gooseberry and tropical fruit in the New World, and green-apple and citrus in French examples.  Gallic Sauvignon has always been around the forefront of wine trends: whether Sancerre, Touraine or Pouilly Fumé.

However, a good alternative which is also currently trending is Verdejo from the Rueda region of northwest Spain.  Unoaked, fragrant, and offering fresh acidity, pleasing minerality, and typical Sauvignon-like notes of lemon and lime citrus, this is good-value, interesting wine which justifies deviation from the ‘I’ll have a Sauvignon Blanc’ default choice.
