FREE CAKE ON OFFER TO CELEBRATE ICONIC CITY RESTAURANT’S MILESTONE
A Norwich chef is celebrating three years at the helm of an iconic city restaurant – and is offering free slices of birthday cake to celebrate.
Richard Ellis took over the historic Britons Arms in Elm Hill in November 2021, right in the midst of the Covid pandemic. At the time he promised that he would retain the winning formula which had made the Britons Arms such a popular fixture for decades, at the same time developing the offer to include dinners, special events and themed dining nights.
Three years on, and the landmark establishment is thriving, with a busy programme of seafood, game and vegan tasting nights, pre-theatre dinners, special wine tasting events, and regular evening service on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
“Taking on The Britons Arms was a bit of a challenge, both because it is such a well-loved city institution, and also because just as I took over the Omicron variant hit and hospitality was once again restricted,” said Mr Ellis, who previously worked in some of the county’s leading kitchens including the Wells Crab House and the Ship at Brancaster.
“The whole team has worked very hard to retain the special feel of the place, while also evolving what we do to make it even better. We have an amazingly loyal clientele, and we are delighted to have reached the third anniversary in such good shape.”
Mr Ellis took over The Britons Arms following a competition run by the Norwich Preservation Trust, which owns the building, to find a new tenant after the previous tenants, who had run the restaurant for more than four decades, retired.
A slice of the specially baked birthday cake will be offered free to everyone visiting the Britons Arms over the birthday weekend, until it is all gone.
