Keys Auctioneers and Valuers is sad to announce the death of Andrew Lindsay-Bullock, who was head of Books at the firm until he stepped down due to ill health in 2023.

Mr Lindsay-Bullock joined Keys in 1990 after spending time with former Norfolk auction house Glennies.  His love of books started with his grandmother, and developed during his time working in the Charing Cross book trade.

After joining Keys he initially worked in the Antiques department, but soon switched to the Books department, where he used his extensive knowledge of the antiquarian book trade to develop one of the UK’s most successful provincial auction house specialist Books operations.

He particularly enjoyed helping vendors discover the great interest in lots about which they knew very little.  Highlights from his long career included a signed photo by Julia Margaret Cameron of Charles Darwin, which realised over £30,000, and a rare copy of Peter Henry Emersons ‘Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads’, which sold for £66,000.

Tim Blyth, managing director of Keys Auctioneers, said, “We are all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and long-term colleague Andrew Lindsay-Bullock, after a long illness.

“Andrew was widely respected as one of the country’s most knowledgeable antiquarian books experts, and his enthusiasm for the subject was infectious and inspirational.  He also understood the business aspect very well, and was always a willing participant in marketing and PR activity to spread the word far and wide.

“One of the things we are most grateful for is his generosity when it came to sharing his knowledge and experience with his colleagues here at Keys.  That we have been able to continue to offer a specialist Books service after he stepped down is testimony to the way he nurtured and encouraged the people who worked alongside him.  It is great testament to Andrew that we will remember him more as a friend than the learned colleague he was.”

A true bibliophile, Mr Lindsay-Bullock also enjoyed books in his private life, alongside his other great passion for horse-racing.

Andrew Lindsay-Bullock died on Sunday 20th October.
