Locals and holidaymakers will be able to enjoy a cleaner beach at Gorleston thanks to the efforts of a team of litter-picking local accountants.

A group of 13 members of staff from Lovewell Blake spent an afternoon clearing the beach of rubbish as part of an initiative in which the firm gives each member of staff the equivalent of a paid full day each year to undertake projects which benefit the local community.

Armed with litter-pickers and robust plastic sacks, the intrepid rubbish-hunters removed many kilograms of abandoned refuse from the beach, picking up everything from flip-flops, cans and drinking cups to plastic straws, shoes and socks.

The beach clean was organised in conjunction with Norfolk Beach Cleans, a not-for-profit organisation which encourages the Norfolk community to get involved in group beach cleans and look after the environment in which they live.

“Each of our 250 or so staff here at Lovewell Blake can take the equivalent of a day a year to volunteer, do work for charities, or undertake tasks which benefit the local community,” said Claire Moore, HR adviser at Lovewell Blake.

“The teams in our coastal branches in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft understand just how important our wonderful beaches are to the economy of the area, as well as caring about the environment in which they live and work – so when an afternoon cleaning Gorleston beach was suggested, lots of colleagues signed up.”
