NORTH WALSHAM STUDENTS TAKE TO THE SHOP FLOOR TO FIND OUT WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM

North Walsham students have taken a trip to the supermarket to learn more about how their food makes the journey from the farm to their plates, as part of Tesco’s ‘Farm to Fork’ initiative.

Over a number of visits, all Year 7 Design and Technology students at North Walsham High School have been to the firm’s Stalham store, where they learned about where their food comes from – as well as being able to touch, feel and taste a variety of foods for themselves.

“With research showing that as many as one in three children think cheese comes from a plant, it is vital that we help our students make the connection between what is on their plate, with where it comes from – especially in a county where food production is such an important part of the economy,” said Teresa Gasgoyne from North Walsham High School.

“Some of these students end up working in the food industry, but all of them need to understand the principles behind nutrition, and there is no better way to do that than to connect directly with food in the very environment where most of them will end up buying it – in a supermarket.

“We are grateful to Tesco at Stalham for giving us the opportunity to visit, and for spending so much time with our students.  When it comes to learning about food, every little helps!”
