NORWICH 104-YEAR-OLD ATTRIBUTES LONG LIFE TO HARD WORK AND SHERRY
A Norwich woman who has celebrated her 104th birthday has attributed her long life to ‘hard work, and a glass of sherry’.
Ellen Lincoln still lives independently at the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind’s sheltered scheme at Hammond court in the city, where she celebrated her milestone birthday at a party with fellow residents and members of her family.
Originally from Gateshead, Mrs Lincoln was in service in London in the early 1930s, before spending the war in Cambridge, where she packed parachutes. After marrying an airman, she came to Norfolk, settling in Thorpe.
Mrs Lincoln has lived at Hammond Court for the past five years, and still leads an independent life, despite failing eyesight.
“Ellen is amazing, she cleans her flat, even turning her mattress once a week,” said Julie Lythgoe of the NNAB, who presented Mrs Lincoln with a specially commissioned birthday cake for the occasion.
“We often see her out and about, and she is an enthusiastic member of various clubs. She really is inspiring.”
Mrs Lincoln says the secret of her old age is two-fold: “I have reached the age of 104 through hard work, and a regular glass of sherry,” she said. “The important thing is to just keep going.”
