PAIR OF LARGE 19TH CENTURY HEREND VASES FEATURE IN KEYS SPRING FINE SALE
Two large porcelain vases with oriental decoration by Hungarian manufactory Herend will go under the hammer in Keys Auctioneers and Valuers’ first three day Fine Sale of the year, on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th and Friday 31st March.
The vases, which date from the late 19th century, were probably made for one of the five ‘Expositions Universelles’ held in Paris during the second half of the 19th century.
The Herend factory, based approximately 100km southwest of Budapest, will celebrate its bicentenary in 2026.
The pair have a pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£4,000.
Keys head of ceramics David Broom said, “With the important anniversary for Herend coming in three years’ time, pieces from the factory’s first century are becoming more sought-after. These two large vases, with their oriental-style decoration, make an eye-catching lot which will appeal to collectors throughout Europe and in the US.”
In the same sale are two stand-out pieces of Lowestoft porcelain: a Lowestoft polychrome teapot inscribed ‘Sarah Roberts’ to the pot and lid and dated 1793 (estimate £1,000-£1,500) and a rare monochrome wall pocket/cornucopia (estimate £2,000-£3,000).
