PARENTS GO BACK TO THE CLASSROOM FOR YEAR 5 LEARNING FESTIVAL

Primary school students from around the North Walsham area took their parents into the classroom at an event designed to help them find out about life at high school, during a special Year 5 Learning Festival at North Walsham High School.

The children – and their parents – were able to experience life in the classroom trying out a range of subjects including maths, science, English, history and food technology.

The aim was to introduce the school and some of its subjects to children and parents who will be making their secondary school choices later this year.

The children and their parents also heard a series of presentations about life at the school, not just from staff, but from head boy Andrew Weston and head girl Jodie Weller.  There was also a series of tours of the school conducted by Year 11 prefects.

“The Learning Festival is designed to give Year 5 students and their parents a real feel for life in high school, something which we can only touch on in more traditional open evenings,” said acting head teacher Ian Winter.

“Nothing gives the accurate impression of school life more than what takes place in the classroom, so the ‘lessons’ in various subjects gave them a taste of what we do and how we approach learning here.

“We work very hard with primary schools in our cluster over an extended period, so that the move to secondary education is not such a big jump as they might fear, and so that their education is as seamless as possible.”

Students were invited to the Festival from North Walsham Junior School, Millfield Primary School, Happisburgh Primary School, Mundesley Junior School, Bacton Primary School, Worstead Primary School and Antingham & Southrepps Primary School.
