Parents worried about keeping their children safe online are being invited to a special Internet Safety Evening in North Walsham  later this month – an event which will see the launch of an updated version of a free Internet Safety Guide which has been in demand from schools throughout the country.

North Walsham High School is inviting any parent to the free event on Thursday 19th November at the school’s Atrium, to hear presentations from online experts, teachers and the Police.  The evening is open to all parents, not just those of students at NWHS.

Attendees will receive the latest edition of North Walsham High School’s renowned 24 page guide to staying safe online, which has been adopted by schools all around the UK since it was first published in 2013.

“It is important that parents keep up with children as much as possible, because they are a step or two ahead of parents most of the time,” said North Walsham High School acting head teacher Ian Winter.

“One of the biggest issues we have to deal with is social media – although 13 is supposed to be the minimum age to use Facebook, 75 per cent of Year 7 students already have a Facebook account.

“If we as parents can improve and develop our knowledge, we have a better chance of keeping our children safe.”

The presentations will cover a range of topics, including the importance of knowing what to post (and not post) online; how to set up appropriate privacy settings; secure passwords; and tackling cyber-bullying.

The Internet Safety Evening is part of ongoing activity at the school to educate young people and their parents about the potential dangers lurking on the internet, and how to minimise the risk of encountering them.  All students receive regular sessions on staying safe online, from teachers, school technical staff and from the police.

The free Internet Safety Evening takes place at 6pm on Thursday 19th November at The Atrium at North Walsham High School, and is open to any parent.

The latest edition of the North Walsham High School Internet Safety Guide will be available to download free of charge immediately after the event, at www.northwalshamhigh.norfolk.sch.uk/student-life/ict-guidelines.
