A revolutionary new piece of equipment which can help visually-impaired people identify faces, read text and watch TV is to be demonstrated at a special even next week.

Norfolk’s sight loss charity Vision Norfolk has arranged a special demonstration of the innovative Oxsight Onyx smart glasses, made by technology firm Sight and Sound Technology, at the charity’s Norwich Hub on Friday 8th April.

The revolutionary new glasses work by capturing an image with the inbuilt camera, processing and enhancing it using the onboard computer and displaying it on bright, colour-rich OLED screens within the smart glasses.  This image is then visible to the part of the eye with suitable remaining vision.

Using the latest AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology, the onboard computer simultaneously processes the image and can helps users better identify faces, text and objects.

They can be used by people living with a range of eye conditions, including Age Related Macular Degeneration; Myopic Macular; Macular Hole; Diabetic Retinopathy; Stroke Related Sight Loss; Stargardts Disease; Macular Dystrophy; and Inverted Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Vision Norfolk equipment expert Richard Polley said, “Technology can be a real game changer in enabling visually-impaired people to live independent lives, and Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasing role in enhancing their lives.

“These new smart glasses are a huge step forward, they really are cutting-edge technology.  We are looking forward to being able to demonstrate how they can change lives during this special event.”

Sight and Sound Technology will also have other examples of their hardware and software products on display for people to try, that may help those with sight loss right across the age range.

The event takes place at Vision Norfolk’s Norwich Hub at The Bradbury Activity Centre, Beckham Place, Norwich, NR3 3DZ, on Friday 8th April from 10am to 2pm.  For more Information about the demonstration, please contact Richard Polley on 01603 573000 or by emailing Richard.polley@visionnorfolk.org.uk.
