SCHOOL’S DAY IN DENIM RAISES OVER £400 FOR GENETIC DISORDERS CHARITY

Students at North Walsham High School have raised £419 for a charity which helps children living with genetic disorders, after persuading their teachers to relax the school uniform code for a day and let them wear jeans with their blazers.

The school took part in Jeans for Genes Day, an annual event which sees people in workplaces and schools across the country pay £1 for the right to wear their jeans for the day.

Several members of staff at the school joined with the students in taking part in the event, which saw the unusual combination of full school uniform from the waist up – and jeans and trainers from the waist down.

“Jeans for Genes Day is such a good idea, because with half a million children in the UK affected by some form of genetic disorder, it is a cause which our students can really identify with,” said NWHS head teacher Neil Powell.

“Ordinarily we expect our students to be proud of their appearance and their uniform, but to support such a great charity we were prepared to make an exception for a day – and we are delighted that so many students and staff chose to take part and help raise such a big sum.”
