Wine lovers have the chance to hone their palates, all in aid of charity, when EDP/Evening News and Feats magazine food and drink writer Andy Newman presents a wine tasting with a difference next week.

Entitled ‘The Great Grape Challenge’, the event is a fun and informative way to learn about the ‘Top Ten’ grape varieties – all in aid of the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind.  The tasting takes place at St Andrew’s House on St Andrew’s Street (the former Norwich & Peterborough building) in Norwich on Wednesday 21st June from 6.30pm-8.30pm.

Andy Newman, a qualified wine tutor, will lead those attending through a tasting of ten wines, helping them to identify different grape varieties using a range of taste prompts – and there will be prizes for those who can match the grape varieties to the wines.

“You can read in books about what each of the main grape varieties is meant to smell and taste like, but in the end the only way to really learn is through using taste prompts,” said Andy.  “So, for example, the only way to find out if Sauvignon Blanc really does smell of gooseberries is to stick your nose in a glass of it and then in some gooseberries.

“With over 50 taste prompts to try ranging from new-mown grass and vanilla to leather and petrol, it’s a great way to educate your palate, whether you are an experienced wine drinker or a complete novice.”

Tickets for the event cost £18 each, with all proceeds going to the NNAB.  Businesses can book tables of ten for £200, to include company table branding.  To book, contact jeremygoss@nnab.org.uk or donnaminto@nnab.org.uk, or call 01603 629558.
